June 9, 1972 - Never forget

Today we commemorate a tragic day in the history of the area.

On June 9th, 1972 the Black Hills suffered a devistating flash flood. At least 236 people died and property damage exceeded $100 million in Rapid City and the surronding area.

Photos and information about the flood can be found online at Devereaux Library at SDSMT, and at the BHSU Library. Need more information? Contact us.

These materials have been made available electronically as part of the Digital Library of South Dakota (DLSD). This digital library is a joint project of South Dakota's regental university libraries. DLSD is a work in progress that began just a few short months ago. The project will provide electronic access to a variety of campus and community historic resources. Devereaux Library is adding materials daily. Check back often and please remember that your work today is tomorrow's history.
